Hey tumblr f(r)iends!

Long time, no post! I’ve been working on new things and have launched my new website, clarabeelavery.com. Come take a gander?

I’ll likely be now using this blog for personal junk, so feel free to follow or unfollow at yr discretion. I’m still regularly checking the wonderful blogs of those of you I follow, so I’ll still be around!

AAAAAAADVENTURE TIME!Hi tumblr. It’s certainly been awhile! The big things that have happened since my last update (months ago, eep!) are:1) Was diagnosed with a spinal disease and some other spinal-cord related issues, but I totally don’t have cancer, which is a real relief! Mostly, this hasn’t changed my life too much. It’s 100% pain management until I can see a surgeon for aforementioned issues, and wait lists are loooong where I live (likely another 6-9 months before my first consult). Consider yourself updated!2) I legally hitched myself to the dude you’ve seen in my pictures! The bespectacled brown guy. While my feelings about the institution of marriage have been and likely always will be complicated, my feelings for him are decidedly uncomplicated: I think he’s pretty wonderful and am glad to have thrown a big party to let my community know just how wonderful, and have a catch-all excuse to see so many loved ones from around the globe.
So, about this picture: Here’s me and my partner as Adventure Time characters Finn and Fionna. We’ve been watching the heck outta this charming little animated series, and I have a tendency to doodle while watching TV/movies…thus, this little ridiculous illo came into being.

Torontonians, y’all should come out to this killer afternoon event. My friend Dave Cave (of the zine Everybody Moon Jump) is launching his newest zine, entitled “How Many Pictures Of Dicks Do I Have To Look At Before I Stop Wanting To Look At Pictures Of Dicks?”, which I believe is going to be an effing tour-de-force.
It’s about gay porn, bee tee dubs.
I’m going to be doin’ support reading (kind of like an opening act) alongside my pal Maranda Elizabeth (of the zines Telegram and Little Acorns ). I will probably try to be way funnier than I am, because Dave is a comedian and I totally want to impress him.

My good best buddy Alison and I drank some beer and then drew monsters on a big ol’ piece of paper together on my floor this afternoon. Here’s part of it!

When you’re sick and you think you might be getting bad news, it’s amazing what you can convince yourself not to do. Truly amazing.
I talked to A. about this last night, in pain and teary-eyed, and he said, super gently, “Stop putting your life on hold. There’s no reason for you to stop drawing, to stop creating.”What a freaking revelation, seriously. I think I’ve been actively denying myself my normal coping mechanisms (drawing, writing, talking to long-distance pals) because I’ve been all, “Oh, I’ll just wait until after I get my diagnosis.” Don’t ask me why this made/makes sense, because I just don’t know.
So, yep. Gonna try to keep holding myself accountable and responsible for my actions and not writing everything off just because I’m a sicky. Feel free to hold me to that.
(Above: Itty-bitty linocuts I did a coupla months ago. Pen, scissors, glue: holy trinity of zinesters everywhere.)

So, this “tiny hiatus” might become less-than-tiny. It’s nothing to worry about - at least, not yet - but my health is getting a little worse, and I need to spend every not-working minute practicing intense self-care.
Basically, there is something wrong with my spine/spinal cord, and unfortunately the first run of tests haven’t given my medical team any answers. I’m still waiting for an MRI which will hopefully point me towards recovery.
For now, here’s a little picture i made last night. I think it’s the most accurate self-portrait I’ve ever done.

Hey tumblr. You might be asking “um, exCUSE me, what happened to those 30-day-drawings you were up until so recently working so diligently on?!”

Well, I just started a new contract at work this Monday, I’ve been workin’ on a logo for a yarn-bombing group, and of course preparing my butt for Pesach/Passover (I seem to lose 5+ followers whenever I make the slightest mention of my Jewish observances, which makes me really uncomfortable, but won’t make me stop). SO! I’m going to be on a small semi-hiatus over the weekend for Passover observance reasons, plus I’ll need a coupla catch-up days, but I’m committed to being back on track rill soon.

Chag Sameach, or happy long weekend! See you very soon!
